WBC。 japanease baseball team members are eagerly preparing for the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC), with Suzuki Masayuki set to return after a nine-year absence. His selection comes at the heels of a stellar season in Major League Baseball (MLB) where he hit 32 home runs, breaking his personal record.
Three years ago, Suzuki had to sit out the WBC due to an injury, missing out on the joy of Japan's championship win. However, the memory of seeing his jersey hung up with his teammates' after they celebrated the title remains a driving force for him now as he aims to make amends and return to the big stage.
"I feel incredibly excited about this opportunity," Suzuki stated in a press release. "I will work hard to prepare my body and make up for the regret of not being able to participate last time. I will give it my all for the team and Japan."
After four years honing his skills in MLB, Suzuki has evolved into one of the top hitters. His 32 home runs during the previous season not only broke his own record but also introduced him to the high-stakes environment of postseason baseball.
"Being able to finish the regular season on a positive note and perform well in the playoffs was very confidence-boosting," Suzuki reflected. "That experience will be invaluable for my future."
As one of Japan's key players who helped secure gold medals in both the 2019 World Baseball Classic and the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Suzuki is expected to play a crucial role as an outfielder and anchor the lineup. His return to the WBC marks his ninth participation since the fourth edition in 2017.
